RightToRead In Sri Lanka

RightToRead Sri Lanka was launched in October of 2018 with a prototype school that would showcase the benefits of the program. By February of 2019, the project expanded to 50 schools as pilot and began working with the Ministry of Education on a detailed roll out plan that would reach all of Sri Lanka by the end of 2021. This Implementation model was tested out on a further 100 schools toward the end of 2019. With measured proficiency improvement of between 30-50%, and improvements in term tests of around 30% in just two terms of use, the results of the project speak for itself. User feedback suggests the app is highly interactive and is very easy to use. The children seem to enjoy the experience encouraging them to increasingly engage and learn during the class which makes any teacher much more effective.

Why English

Illiteracy in English is a major problem globally, denying populations opportunities of higher education and training. This entraps them in the cycle of generational poverty.

The graph to the right shows all languages with more the 0.1% of information production. This includes everything from the internet, to news and scholarly articles. Unfortunately, the Sri Lanka child who is fluent in either Singhalese or Tamil has access to less than 0.1% of all of the world’s information produced. This leaves the Sri Lanka child with a huge disadvantage in the Global Arena. Most of the world’s trade, business and learning opportunities are in English. Lee Kuan Yew, the former Prime Minister of Singapore, said “The key to avoid falling behind in the world is English.” He ensured every Singaporean was thought English to ensure everyone spoke a common language. This took Singapore to the global arena.

English proficiency is a critical skill that will catapult Sri Lanka into the global arena

46% of all information production worldwide is in English.
